Valencene is a naturally occurring organic compound classified as a sesquiterpene. It is characterized by a bicyclic structure with three isoprene units . Valencene exudes an herbaceous, sweet citrus aroma with notes of freshly cut wood and is commonly found in the essential oils of various plant species, including Valencia oranges (from which it derives its name) and other citrus fruits like grapefruit, tangerines, and clementines.
Valencene is a precursor to nootkatone, another terpene which is the main contributor to the aroma and flavor of grapefruit. the compound exhibits anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and thus it is often used in insecticides, cleaning, personal care products and cosmetics.
