Terpineols are a class of terpenoids, a terpene-like compounds that are modified by the addition of a functional group. Terpineols have been isolated from a variety of sources such as cardamom, cajuput oil, pine oil, and petitgrain oil. Four isomers exist: α-, β-, γ-terpineol, and terpinen-4-ol, with α- isomer being the most abundant one. Although it is naturally occurring, terpineol is commonly manufactured from alpha-pinene, which is hydrated in the presence of sulfuric acid while the alternative route starts from limonene.

α-terpineol has a fresh, floral, and slightly herbal scent, making it a valuable ingredient in perfumes, colognes, and fragrances. It adds a pleasant, calming note to scented products. It is also found in some over-the-counter and prescription medications, primarily in cough syrups and topical ointments, for its potential soothing and respiratory benefits.
