Geraniol is a naturally occurring terpene alcohol found in various plant species, including geraniums (where it also gets its name from), roses, citrus fruit, peaches, and various berries and it is characterized by a sweet, floral, and slightly citrusy aroma. Geraniol has two isomers, (R)-geraniol and (S)-geraniol, with the (S)-geraniol form being more common in nature. It is widely used in the fragrance and flavor industry due to its pleasant scent.
Like many other terpenes geraniol exhibits antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, research also suggest analgesic properties. This terpene is often present in cannabis and is thought to contribute to the calming and anxiety-reducing effects associated with certain cannabis strains. A pyrophospate ester of geraiol, called geranyl pyrophosphate, is important in biosynthesis of other terpenes such as myrcene and ocimene and is a precursor to many natural products, also used in the biosynthesis pathway of many cannabinoids in the form of CBGA.
