Camphor is a naturally occurring bicyclic monoterpene ketone found in various plant sources, including camphor laurel, rosemary, and eucalyptus. It has a strong, pungent aroma and is commonly used in medicinal balms, topical analgesics, and insect repellents. Camphor is a ketone with a molecular structure composed of ten carbon atoms arranged in a bicyclic ring system. It contains a ketone group (-C=O) and has three chiral carbon atoms, giving rise to multiple stereoisomers.

Pharmacologically, camphor has shown various potential therapeutic properties. When used topically, it exhibits analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects, providing temporary relief from minor aches and pains. Regarding its relationship with cannabinoids, camphor does not directly interact with the endocannabinoid system (ECS) like cannabinoids do. The main difference between the two camphor isomers lies in their stereochemistry. D-camphor (also known as (+)-camphor) has the (R) configuration at all three chiral carbon atoms. D-camphor is the natural form and is responsible for the characteristic aroma and medicinal properties associated with camphor. L-camphor (also known as (-)-camphor) has the (S) configuration at all three chiral carbon atoms. L-camphor is a synthetic isomer that can be produced in the laboratory.

The isomeric forms of camphor have similar chemical properties but may have subtle differences in their biological activities and aroma characteristics. D-camphor is the more commonly used form due to its natural occurrence and well-established therapeutic applications.
