Beta-caryophyllene, often referred to as BCP, is a natural bicyclic sesquiterpene found in various plants, including black pepper, cloves, and certain cannabis strains.It has a unique structure characterized by a cyclobutane ring. Beta-caryophyllene is distinct among terpenes because it acts as a selective agonist of the cannabinoid receptor type 2 (CB2).  Beta-caryophyllene selectively binds to and activates the CB2 receptor, one of the two primary cannabinoid receptors in the endocannabinoid system (ECS). This interaction makes it unique among terpenes, as it mimics the action of cannabinoids like CBD. While it doesn't directly interact with CB1 receptors (the primary receptors responsible for the psychoactive effects of THC), it can modulate the ECS by binding to CB2 receptors. This interaction may enhance the overall effects of the ECS and contribute to the entourage effect when consumed alongside cannabinoids. 

Apart from antioxidant, analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects, some studies suggest that beta-caryophyllene's interaction with the ECS may have neuroprotective properties, potentially benefiting conditions like neurodegenerative diseases.
